The Virgin’s Son

Advent Day #3

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Matthew 1:23

Isaiah, a prophet of God hundreds of years before the first Christmas, promised an ungodly king of Judah that a virgin would conceive and bring forth a son named Immanuel in Isaiah 7:14. Why would God make this promise to King Ahaz? The focus of this king’s worship had fallen to empty, sightless idols. The entire book of Isaiah is spent calling God’s people back to the Creator who had flung the stars into place and stretched out the heavens as a curtain. (Isaiah 40:22, 26).

This first Christmas, the Virgin’s Son would reorient the world to proper worship. The One who created Mary would now subject Himself to the same process as He was knit together in her womb. He was no longer speaking through men; He would now come to be with men Himself. This God who longed for men to know Him would do everything in His power to make it so.

Because man is created to worship, there is no question that each of us makes something the object of our worship. Mary recognized her opportunity to center her worship on the Creator as she willingly offered herself back to Him. By her offering, the Son of the Highest came to be recognized as the center of man’s worship once again. Yet, we are forgetful, so Christmas calls us back to proper focus. Who will we worship today?

  1. Years ago I wrote a blog article on The Golden Calf and how each of us has an idol in our lives. I have thought about that article a lot since then as I reexamine my heart to see what or who I’m making a priority. I just finished a book yesterday called God Does His Best Work with Empty by Nancy Guthrie (found the audio version on Hooplah) and it ended with how worthy our precious Lord is of devoting our life to Him. It was such an encouraging book – add it to your to-read list! 😉 Thank you for this reminder to keep our focus on the One who is worthy of our worship. 💕

    1. Thank you for that recommendation! There may not be any more overlooked sin in the life of a Christian than idolatry. I also remember your post about the Golden calf. It would definitely be worth linking here.

  2. Erica I so enjoy the thoughts you share on Scripture. The advent is helping my Christmas spirit. Not sure why but I have missed Advent 1. Is it possible for you to email me it?
