Retracing Our Steps

Life can be quite the journey, can’t it? Think about the last ten years of your life. Think of the highs where God taught you something that has stuck with you. Can you mark them as a map in your Bible?

That is why I love writing in my Bible as I read. I do not follow a Bible reading schedule, but I do read it through once or twice a year. Sometimes I stop to study a chapter, a book, or a theme. Often, I just like to read it from cover to cover because I can revisit the special places where God became personal to me.

I just started over again, and Abraham’s life reflects the journey that Christian’s walk today. God spoke to him, and he just packed up his family to set out on a path he had never been before. As he pitched his tent in a new place, he would build an altar to worship. When he worshiped, God would meet him there, reminding him of his promises, often adding more details.

Abraham did not have a Bible written down, yet he just believed God. He took what God said as fact, even when it took decades to come to pass. When life threw him off course, he returned to his last altar to remember and realign his path again. (Genesis 13:1-4). He made new altars as he continued his journey, some that his son and his children’s children would revisit and remember, as well. (Genesis 21:31-33-Abraham; 26:23-25-Isaac; 28:10-22; 46:1-4-Jacob at the altar of Bethel).

Life will throw us off course many times in our walk with God. We will need a place to return to realign our walk with Him. Do you have those special times with God marked down somewhere?

In my Bible, there are so many special places to revisit. Where God introduced Himself to me, there is a note. There is a date written down next to the verse when I called on Him to save me. The verses that taught me to cast my burdens upon Him when I was overwhelmed are marked. The place where He exhorted me to pray for my prodigal, have her return date printed beside them. The verses that comforted me when I lost two babies before we met have a marker. The verses that corrected me when I went way off course have notes next to them. The verses that reset my heart after devastating disappointments are highlighted and marked with the dates of victory. Most importantly, the verses that taught me who Jesus is, His faithfulness, His character, His unwavering love, all bring me back to my “why” every time.

Do you have those places marked where you met personally with the One who created you and loves you?

Have you even been introduced to Him, yet? I would love the opportunity to introduce you through the pages of His Word. Please message me if you have any questions about your eternity.

The joy of journaling through those special places in God’s Word is that our children can someday come back to them too. I would highly recommend it!

What is one of the special places where you have met God personally?  Is it a verse you revisit often? Maybe God will use that verse through you to encourage someone else. Beersheba and Bethel were visited by Abraham’s children for generations. Our changed lives bring hope to others, too. Don’t be afraid to share your story.

Blessings to you all, my friends. Have a wonderful day!

  1. I so enjoyed this devotion!  I, too, am one who reads a hard-copy Bible and marks it up frequently in all colors! Highlights, underlines, circles-“all of the above”!  And I love to go back to reread and notice what I have marked before. In fact, it dismays me somewhat when I look around our Sunday morning Bible study group and see how few people actually have a hard-copy Bible, most are reading from their phones….and this is a group of we older adults.  I try not to be judgemental, but I do feel that they are missing out on a lot. And I would say that probably the Lord is using/has used Proverb 3:5 the most in my life recently, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.”  And in His mercy, sometimes, He does explain things to me.  He is definitely a compassionate God, helping me to understand when He sees me struggling with trusting Him. It would be so fun if we lived close together to just sit down one day and go through our Bibles page by page and see where we’ve marked passages.  What ones might show up “same here”.  Well, I just had a thought, “We’ll have plenty of time in eternity, and it might take us that long to get all the way from Genesis to Revelation! Love,Judith

    1. Yes, next time we are both in Kansas, we will have to sit down with our Bibles and share our testimonies! I would love that. I have the Olive Tree Bible app that I use on occasion, and it is nice that I can put notes in my Bible app too. It syncs to all my devices, so if I pull it up on my phone and put a note, it will be in my IPad also. Technology is nice, but my paper Bible is still my favorite too!

      1. I do have a You Version app on my phone and a Bible Gateway app. They help when I’m wanting to look up some references without losing my place at the passage where I’m at.  Sometimes, it gets tricky with the Bible on my lap, AND my journal, AND a devotional book that I’m using.  I do find the phone apps easier to use at that point.  But like you, it’s still my paper Bible that I prefer!

  2. That is excellent! II Corinthians 5:17 is one of my favorites, because I thought I was a Christian before I became born again! And so many people claim Christ but there’s never been a change!

    1. 2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Amen! The Holy Spirit moving in definitely makes some changes in His new living space!
