Grateful

The pages of the small New Testament rustled in the hands of the man next to me on the flight home yesterday. In a heavily accented voice, he asked me if I knew what he held. I smiled and nodded, as I looked up from my book. He explained that he had been jailed in his home country for carrying in Bibles for his people. More than twenty years ago, he was freed from prison and able to move to America. He marveled at the freedom we have here to worship freely. Once again, I was reminded that much blood was shed so that I could hold God’s Word in my hand and share it with others.

Every freedom I hold dear was paid for by someone else. It was not free. In fact, a Middle Eastern missionary reminded our church recently that most open mission fields around the world have received the Gospel because the American military paved the way first. America’s might was used to promote freedom around the world, not to crush it.

We live in a very unique place in a very unique time. Memorial Day is a perfect time to remember all we have been given at the expense of those who gave all.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

Have a wonderful weekend, my friends!
