A Song of Strength

The Israelites were completely helpless.

Their knees were weak, hearts pounding, overwhelmed with fear, and there was no where to go.

The Red Sea pinned them in on one side and Pharoah’s army on the other.

The Truth of their situation is that God brought them there on purpose. He brought them to a place of helplessness so their only option would be to stand still and let the Lord fight for them.

And, oh, how He delivered! Walls of water bordered their dry crossing with a dark cloud dividing them from the enemy. When the army broke through, all the chariot wheels inexplicably fell off and the water came crashing down drowning the whole Egyptian army. God had fought for them.

He made a way, destroyed the enemy, broke slavery’s chains from off their feet, and led them out into a new life. He became their salvation.

Just a few short verses later, though, there was no water. Of course, the people remembered what they had just sung about a few hours earlier.

The Lord is my strength and song, and He is become my salvation!

No, instead, their helplessness led to murmuring and fretting. Soon they were hungry, and yet again, murmuring ensued.

The Israelites had not yet learned that the God of their salvation was their strength and song for every moment of every day.

Can we not live much the same way? God gloriously saves us from the destruction the enemy had planned for us. He pulls us out of the pit of sin that we are completely helpless to save ourselves from, and He prepares a way before us, walking with us. He becomes our salvation for eternity, but we forget He can take care of today.

We worship Him on Sundays and fret again on Mondays. Our hearts are given to forgetfulness and fear.

As a mom, big fears have often made me forgetful of just how big my God is.

“What if I mess my kids up?” “What if they choose a different path?” “What if something happens to them while I am gone?”

If I trust God for my salvation, I can trust Him to work in and with the hearts of my children too. In fact, He must, and I must get out of His way.

What about those financial needs that I cannot do any more than I am doing to resolve? I can trust Him for that too.

Health issues that have no answer and no cure? If I can trust Him with my eternity, He can be my strength and song every day.

There is nothing we go through in this life that He does not know and He does not have an answer for.

If you can trust Him for your eternity, you can trust Him to be your strength and song for every day of your life.

As you go to church and sing your praise, carry those songs home with you and sing them all week long. He is the same God everywhere you go!

Blessings, my friends!

  1. Carry the songs home from church with you is a wise idea, Erica! I’ve put a Post-It in my sermon-journal, reminding me to write down a title or two of our church worship songs next Sunday. Then I can access the lyrics on Youtube during the week and tap into that joy and strength we experience on Sunday morning. Thank you!
